HOUSE SUPPORTS BTN PRIVATIZATION PLAN

Jakarta, Sept 9 (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives supported state bank BTN's privatization by way of an Initial Public Offering (IPO) soon, which is one of the decisions in the hearing with the House's Commission XI on Tuesday.

Awal Kesumah, the commission XI chairman told BTN to prepare a detailed explanation on the method and target by the end of this month.

In order to support the privatization plan, dividends should not be given to the government, but used as additional capital to improve the bank's performance, Kesumah said.
The hearing discussed BTN's performance during the first semester of 2008, especially with regard to extending loans to low and middle income businesses.
In the meantime, a lawmaker told BTN to rebuild its image as property credit provider, and compete with private banks in this sector.
Meanwhile, Iqbal Lantaro, the bank's managing director mentioned that the privatization plan was one of the decisions made by stakeholders general meeting which has received the State Enterprises Minister's approval. Thus the bank is now looking forward to a final approval of the House.
