PM: Men nabbed along Thai-Cambodian border for alleged spying will be prosecuted

BANGKOK, June 10 (TNA) - Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Friday that three men, a Thai, a Cambodian and a Vietnamese, who were arrested in Kantaralak District of Thailand's northeastern Si Sa Ket Province near the Thai-Cambodian border for alleged spying, will be prosecuted under the Thai laws.

Abhisit noted that an official investigation is also needed to determine the three men's motivation, and that the international community is to be informed of the incident.

After the arrest, an official of the Cambodian Consulate-General in Thailand's eastern Sa Kaeo Province reportedly visited the trio and to seek options to assist them.

Police Colonel Sompoj Khomprang, superintendent of Kantaralak District police station, said the arrest followed a military intelligence report that the trio were driving around Si Sa Ket, gathering information on Thai military bases and bunkers built for local residents along the Thai-Cambodian border.

Police Colonel Sompoj revealed that the Thai authorities also found with the three suspects a Cambodian military map and a Thai map with different scales and four mobile phones.

The trio was charged with espionage threatening Thailand’s national security, while the Thai and Cambodian suspects also faced additional charges of drug abuse, as the Thai authorities found both of them were tested positive for methamphetamines. (TNA)
