Thailand to remain world’s largest rice exporter

BANGKOK, June 10 (TNA) - The Thai Commerce Ministry says that Thailand will remain the world’s largest rice exporter, with the country's rice exports this year alone likely to exceed 10 million tons.
Permanent Secretary for Commerce Yanyong Puangraj acknowledged on Friday that Thailand maintained to be the world's largest rice exporter during the first five months of this year when the country shipped over 5.7 million tons of rice, worth more than 88 billion baht, to overseas markets.
Yanyong said his ministry has targeted Thailand's total rice export this year at 8-9.5 million tons, as many rival countries have suspended their rice exports; while demand for Thai rice on the world market has remained high for its recognised quality.
In another development, the senior Thai commerce ministry official revealed that his ministry will organize an academic seminar from June 20-22--in which over 500 representatives from more than 50 countries will be invited to participate. Yanyong said that the three-day seminar is aimed at boosting confidence in Thailand among the trading partners and promoting Thai products, in preparation for the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by 2015--after which Thai rice exports are believed to further expand.
