UNAIDS praises Thailand for successfully coping with AIDS

BANGKOK, June 10 (TNA) - The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has praised Thailand as one of three countries in the world which have effectively coped with AIDS.

Thai Permanent Secretary for Public Health Dr. Paijit Warachit said on Friday that the UNAIDS executive director expressed the appreciation to Thailand at an international conference on AIDS solutions at the UN headquarters in New York, being held from June 8-10, noting that Thailand's AIDS measures are recognized for successfully reducing the number of HIV-infected people and AIDS-related deaths in the country.

Dr. Paijit, who has been assigned by Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and caretaker public health minister Jurin Laksanawisit to lead a Thai delegation to attend the three-day High-Level UN Meeting on HIV/IDS, revealed that participants, comprising prime ministers and health ministers of 160 countries across the world, have jointly worked out a new declaration and sustainable solutions to worldwide AIDS problems.

Dr. Paijit said the Thai delegates have told the meeting that over the past 27 years Thailand has successfully protected local people with campaigns for the 100-per cent use of condoms and the prevention of HIV transmission from mothers to babies.

According to the senior public health official, the Thai government plans to extend its AIDS-related services to 90 per cent of newly HIV-infected people in the country over the next five years, including homosexuals, sex workers and injection drug users; while also preventing new HIV infection, AIDS-related deaths and discrimination.
