Thai authorities working out safe plan to salvage sunken sugar barge

AYUTTHAYA, June 10 (TNA) - Authorities concerned are working out a safe plan to salvage a sunken sugar barge in the Chao Phraya River; while the governor of Thailand's central Ayutthaya Province has ordered riverbank houses to be dismantled to escape from bank erosion.

As the salvage of the sunken sugar barge was set on June 11, Thai caretaker deputy transport minister Kuakul Danchaiwijit, who supervises water transportation, has discussed the safe salvage plan with Commander Rachata Phakafung, water transportation chief of Ayutthaya.

Models were used to demonstrate how inflatable pontoons will be applied to lift the sunken barge. The operation requires capable workers and effective equipment and must happen only at day for the safety of workers. The caretaker deputy minister noted that the pontoon-lifted barge will then be pulled toward Wat Pananchoeng in the province for repair.

Ayutthaya Governor Withaya Phiewphong acknowledged that he has ordered four riverside houses near the sunken barge to be dismantled as their soil was being eroded due to currents redirected by the barge, and that the barge owner and the party which hired the barge were set to sign a compensation agreement on Friday.
