ACA TO COMBAT CORRUPTION IN OTHER GOVT AGENCIES NEXT, SAYS DG

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 (Bernama)-- After busting 44 runners and staff
of the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom) during their
anti-corruption operations, the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) is now gearing up to take on other government agencies.

Its director-general Ahmad Said Hamdan said what happened in Puspakom had attracted other agencies to have a similar operation, dubbed "Ops Compact", done in their agencies.

Thus, the ACA would start the inspection and monitoring processes in those agencies, he told a press conference after visiting the Puspakom inspection centre here Tuesday.

Ahmad also said probes were still being done on the 23 Puspakom staff and
21 runners who were arrested on Aug 27 for giving the "all clear" sign for
faulty vehicles and approving inspections without the presence of the
vehicles.

When asked on the allegation that the arrested staff and runners received
up to RM15,000 monthly, he said it was just a presumption.

However, he did not deny that some of them did manage to secure
high income.

Meanwhile, Puspakom Chief Executive Officer Salamat Wahit said the arrested
staff will be suspended until ACA concluded its investigation.

He said, so far, 11 vehicles involved in the probe were reported to the
Road Transport Department to be called for re-inspection at the
Puspakom.

"The Puspakom whitening process will continue until the corruption is fully
tackled, and by then, only staff with integrity will be allowed to work," he
said.

On other developments, Salamat said Puspakom had detected between 70 and 80
cases of "cut-and-join" cars monthly, nationwide.

He said information about the cars had been handed over to the RTD for
further probe and action.
