Flooding in Thai south still critical

SURAT THANI, June 9 (TNA) - Flooding in Thailand’s southern Surat Thani province remains critical as the water levels keep rising.

Flood levels in many villages of Ban Sadet locality in Khian Sa district were 20 centimeters deeper on Thursday due to persisted rains and rising underground water.

The flooding had forced local people living in low areas, particularly in rubber plantations, to evacuate to higher areas. The situation seriously concerned local people as flooded rubber plantations were their important income source. The Surat Thani Provincial Administration Organisation has sent rescue workers, volunteers and community leaders to help them relocate.

The flooding also expanded to Ban Khao Na village in Tambon Ton-yuan locality of Pha-nom district.

Meanwhile, rice farmers in several districts of Nakhon Sawan province burst into tears as overflows from the local Bung Boraphet Lake flooded tens of square kilometers of their paddy fields. Some farmers said they had asked local fishery authorities to drain water from the lake but to no avail. (TNA)
