Tour operators in Thailand demand for a capable tourism minister

BANGKOK, June 9 (TNA) - Tour operators in Thailand have called on the new government to select a capable tourism minister.

Mairat Peerayankoset, president of the Association of Domestic Travel (ADT), said the operators hoped the government after the July 3 election would select a tourism minister who was capable of maintaining Thailand’s competitiveness in the sector. She warned the country could otherwise lose opportunities to promote its tourism if a new minister was selected only to meet the cabinet portfolio quota of a coalition party as having been practiced before.

Mairat also said although the country had many places of attractions, it did not have good infrastructures with modernized transportation facilities to facilitate tourists. She, therefore, hoped that the new government would seriously develop transportation facilities including airports and railroads to facilitate tourism.

The ADT president also urged the new government to improve education system in order to produce highly-skilled tourism personnel to feed the growing demand in tourism sector. (TNA)
