Thai tourism not affected by E. coli outbreaks overseas

BANGKOK, June 9 (TNA) - The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) reported on Thursday that the domestic tourism has not been affected by overseas outbreaks currently of the most severe strain of the deadly Escherichia coli or E. coli bacteria, o104, so far.

Prakit Piriyakiart, TAT Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications, said that international travellers have visited Thailand as scheduled, based on reports from TAT offices overseas, thanks to the Thai Ministry of Public Health's close monitoring and effective measures against any outbreak of the deadly o104 bacterium in the country.

Meanwhile, Charoen Wang-ananont, President of the Thai Travel Agents Association (TTAA), acknowledged that there have been no reports on any cancellation of outbound grouped tours of Thai tourists from TTAA members so far, but the Thai travellers have all demanded for no-veggies menu as a precaution during the ongoing spread of the deadly soil-based E. coli in Europe, which has claimed some 23 lives since last week.

According to TTAA figures, outbound tours of Thai tourists rose by 30-40 per cent year-on-year during the annual high-tourism season this year, from January-May, after which the outbound trips by Thai travellers have slowed down during this low-tourism period, particularly those destined for Europe.
