Thai veggies business chain warned to beware of E. coli

BANGKOK, June 9 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Commerce's Department of Export Promotion has warned local producers, dealers and exporters of vegetables and fruits to maintain high quality of their contamination-free veggie products in the wake of outbreaks of the most deadly o104 strain of the E. coli bacteria in Europe over the past 10 days.

Nantawan Sakuntanak, the department's director-general, insisted on Thursday that it is a must for all those involved in the Thai veggies business chain to be on high alert to uphold the high quality and safety of Thai food products in order to maintain the country's competitiveness and market shares in the veggie sector in overseas economies.

Nantawan said that several countries have banned imported vegetables and fruits from the European Union (EU) as a precaution; so, all parties in the Thai veggies business chain are to pay attention to absolutely maintain Thailand as a world E. coli-free veggies supplier; otherwise, the Kingdom may fall into a trap of non-tariff protectionist policy imposed, particularly, by developed economies citing any food contamination as a reason.

Meanwhile, Adisai Thammakup, chief of Thailand's international trade promotion office in London, cautioned that Thailand could be affected by the current outbreaks of the severe o104 E. coli bacterium in Europe, as the country relied on imported veggies for raw materials or for industrial use from the United Kingdom worth some 56.9 US dollars last year, including grains, flour, oil seeds, cooking oil, aromatic plants, as well as cocoa and rubber products.
