Authority: Water condition of Chao Phraya River returns to normal

AYUTTHAYA, June 9 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment's Pollution Control Department said in its latest notice publicized on Thursday that the water condition in Thailand's main Chao Phraya River has now returned to normal, following a recent sinking of a sugar barge in the country's central Ayutthaya Province with subsequent damage and pollution.

According to the official notice, tests on water quality of the Chao Phraya River conducted by the Pollution Control Department in several benchmarked sites have found that dissolved oxygen levels in the river have been rising.

The department reported that the dissolved oxygen levels in the Chao Phraya River in Ayutthaya's Bang Sai District, at a water pumping station in Pathum Thani Province's Muang District and in Nonthaburi Province's Pak Kred District have already increased to 4 milligrammes/litre, 3 milligrammes/litre and 3.3 milligrammes/litre respectively.

As the standard benchmark of the dissolved oxygen level in the Chao Phraya River is 3 milligrammes/litre, the department concluded that the water condition in the river has now returned to normal.

The barge carrying some 2,400 tonnes of brown sugar sank in Ayutthaya on May 31, after hitting a bridge pillar, causing heavy pollution and damage to fisheries and some riverbank houses in affected areas. (TNA)
