Atta denies charges of bargaining Tahrir Sq. detainees before releasing them

Baghdad (NINA) - Spokesman for the Baghdad Operations Command, Maj. Gen. Qassim Atta, denied the statement of the four detainees of Tahrir Square, who said in their press conference today that Atta bargained them before being released.

He said in a statement to NINA on Wednesday "I am not authorized to release or compromising on anything, my visit to them was carried out upon the desire of some activists, including Emad Al Khafaji, who asked me to visit them, and he accompanied me during that visit and he is aware with everything that happened in the visit."

Ali Abd Al Khaliq Al Jaf accused Atta of bargaining them during his visit to them in prison and that they were asked not to reveal what happened during their detention, in exchange for their release.

Atta continued "I helped them and put them in a room equipped with air conditioner, mobiles and we gave them new and clean clothes."

He also denied that the four detainees were subjected to any kind of torture, and said "on the contrary, they were given good treatment so that I offered them my help to hold a press conference if they want it."

Muayad Faisal, one of the detainees, told a news conference held at the Peace and Solidarity HQ today that he and his colleagues were taken to an unknown location, known later as the Muthanna airport, where they were left standing; blindfolded and handcuffed from Friday afternoon until Saturday morning.
He added "many charges were directed against us; like, having several forged IDs, tearing Maliki’s photos, and that we are terrorists and Baathists."
Ahmed Al Baghdadi said "the prison administration forged some IDs, but carrying our pictures that were taken to us inside the prison."
He expressed his surprise at Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki’s describing them as forgers, demanding Maliki to officially apologize to them.
For his part, Al Jaf said they were taken out of jail on bail to keep the charges standing, so that to arrest them again if they went out to protest again.
The four were released yesterday and said the arrest will not prevent them from demonstrating once again, their determination will not be frustrated, and they are continuing their march, as they called it.
