Thailand enhances intelligence against improvised explosive device

BANGKOK, June 8 (TNA) - The Royal Thai Army is enhancing its intelligence work against improvised explosive device for national security reasons.
Thai Army Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha told reporters Wednesday that he has instructed the Fourth Army Area Command to improve its intelligence work by increasing the number of intelligence personnel in order to, particularly, prevent the use of improvised explosive device in the country's insurgency-plagued far South.
General Prayuth said that he has also ordered army intelligence agencies to closely monitor sales, movements, transfer and use of the bomb-making materials, most often found in construction businesses, and that he, himself, has coordinated with provincial governors and agencies concerned to control these materials in the local construction works, stressing that the comprehensive effort is a key to ensure efficient security in the country.
Regarding frequent M79 grenade attacks by suspected insurgents in Thailand’s deep South, General Prayuth acknowledged that, apparently, the attacks were targeting at state officials; therefore, he had ordered the state security forces in the restive South to be more vigilant.
The Thai army commander-in-chief revealed that he has also instructed local officials to take stringent measures at all security checkpoints in the far South and to even set up more security checkpoints to limit the use of the heavy weapon; while speedily tracking down the suspected insurgents.
