WB warns Thailand of soaring inflation after general election

BANGKOK, June 8 (TNA) - The US-based World Bank has warned Thailand of possibly soaring inflation in the wake of the forthcoming general election, set on July 3, due to populist policies to be implemented by political parties winning the national poll.
Ms Kirida Bhaopichitr, the World Bank's country economist for Thailand, said Wednesday that Thai political parties are presenting policies on raising people’s incomes and on investment in local infrastructure projects--which will stimulate spending, and thus soaring inflation in the wake of the upcoming general election.
However, she believes that any party that joins the next government will control the state’s spending because Thailand is always concerned over budget deficits and public debts. If the new government poses such problems, it will develop a negative image. She suggested income-increase policies target specific groups of people to limit spending. (TNA)
