Thailand to promote more knowledge about jellyfish

BANGKOK, June 7 (TNA) - The Thai Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, together with the Department of Disease Control, have jointly agreed to promote more knowledge about venomous jellyfish to better protect Thai and foreign tourists.

Kasemsant Jinnawaso, director-general of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, and Manit Theeratantikanont, director-general of the Department of Disease Control, signed a memorandum of understanding between two departments for a joint-study on biological diversity, the distribution of and the high season of venomous jellyfish, including related problems.

Kasemsant said the study would lead to more effective treatment and the prevention of deaths caused by venomous jellyfish as well as the development of precautionary measures to better protect tourists from jellyfish stings.

Most deaths relating to the jellyfish result from a species called “box jellyfish”, which are numerously found in Australia. They are also present at Thai tourist destinations and mangrove forests in both the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, including those in Phuket, Krabi and Trat provinces. (TNA)
