Improvement needed for bio shrimp farming

BANGKOK, June 7 (TNA) - Thailand's National Bureau of Agricultural Commodity and Food Standards (ACFS) held a seminar in Bangkok on Tuesday to sound out public opinions on an Agricultural Products Standard Draft to be later adopted to improve quality of shrimps produced in Thailand to meet international standards and to discuss possibilities of raising qualitative bio shrimps farming in the country.

According to ACFS Deputy Secretary General Montri Kritsaneephaiboon, there are currently more than 30 local farmers operating the bio shrimp farming business in Thailand. To successfully raise bio shrimps, Montri said, natural ecological balance needs to be maintained along with a good waste management system.

The ACFS chief acknowledged, however, that the bio farming method is not widely known in the Kingdom and more improvements are needed to secure its recognition internationally, saying that he believes the bio farming will eventually become an alternative method for Thai shrimp farmers in the future with global recognition of the newly-developed Thai produce.
