Transport Ministry to sue operator of sunken sugar barge
AYUTTHAYA, June 7 (TNA) - The Thai cabinet on Tuesday ordered the Transport Ministry to sue a private company operating a sugar barge that sank in the Chao Phraya River of Ayutthaya Province.
The vessel, carrying aboard 2,400 tons of brown sugar, sank in the river in Tambon Phukhaothong locality on May 31, killing thousands of fresh water fish, including those raised in fish farms.
Meanwhile, authorities, including Ayutthaya governor Witthaya Phiewphong and Colonel Chartchai Khanthasuwan, deputy commander of the Saraburi Provincial Army, continued to monitor a salvage operation on the vessel, which had been stalled since Monday night due to powerful currents.
During the trip, the governor expressed his concern over failing attempts to reclaim the eroded riverbank, noting that persisting erosion already strained the nerves of nearby riverside residents. He insisted he would consult with the Navy soon for possible solutions. (TNA)
