ASEAN plans to integrate its fishing industry in four years

BANGKOK, June 7 (TNA) - The Fishery Department of Thailand will organise the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center Conference or the ASEAN-SEAFDEC Conference at Sofitel Centara Grand Hotel in Bangkok on June 13-17.

Jirawan Yaemprayoon, inspector-general of the Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry, on Tuesday confirmed the holding of the ASEAN-SEAFDEC Conference on Sustainable Fisheries for Food Security towards 2020, noting that the theme of this year conference would be “Fish for the People 2020: Adaptation to a Changing Environment”.

At the conference, representatives of 11 ASEAN member countries would discuss eight important topics including the enhancement of fishery management, the sustainable cultivation of aquatic animals, the trade of aquatic animals and fishery products.

Meanwhile, Somying Piumsomboon, director-general of the Fishery Department, said she hoped the conference would lead to the empowerment of regional fishing industry that would support the establishment of the ASEAN Community in 2015. (TNA)
