Barzani meets with UN officials, stresses KRG’s intention to enact laws to protect human rights


Erbil (NINA) - Kurdistan Region President Massoud Barzani met in Salahuddine resort with Ivan Simmonovij, Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations for Human Rights and discussed the situation in Iraq and Kurdistan and efforts exerted to improve the reality of human rights in the region.

A statement issued by the Presidency of Kurdistan said "Barzani stressed the real orientation of Kurdistan, with all its institutions, to protect the individual’s and society’s rights by enacting laws and issuing instructions," pointing out to "the ancient culture of the people of Kurdistan in terms of brotherly coexistence."

The UN envoy expressed "thanks to the Kurdistan Regional Government on their good relations with the Human Rights Committee and Legal Committee of the Parliament as well as with the concerned ministries," adding "the UN feels great satisfaction at the KRG’s handling the events that have occurred recently in Sulaymaniya,” declaring that any country in the world does not reach the perfect level on the issue of human rights.


Assistant Secretary General of the UN asked the "media outlets to be free from the political point and to be committed to the professional values ​​of journalism and to avoid libel and direct accusations, he also stressed appreciation of the UN concerning the protection of women's rights and defend them," referring to "the significant role of women in Kurdistan, and praising the KRG treatment of civil society organizations."
