BOI: Investment projects seeking privileges exceed Bht200bn this year
BANGKOK, June 6 (TNA) - The Board of Investment (BOI) has reported that the value investment projects in Thailand seeking promotional privileges from the Board exceeded 200 billion baht in the first five months of this year.
BOI Secretary General, Atchaka Sibunruang, confirmed the report on Monday, citing a combined investment value of 208 billion baht from a total of 725 applications for investment privileges. Atchaka said the period had seen an improvement both in the number of investment projects and their values.
Atchaka revealed the number of applications for investment privileges rose by 51%, and the total investment value increased by 25% year-on-year. She said a total of 184 applications with a total investment value of 63 billion baht were directed for metal, machinery and transportation equipment industries, followed by 154 applications worth 42 billion baht for service and public utility industries, 99 applications worth 37 billion baht for chemical, paper and plastic industries, and 108 applications worth 28 billion baht in electronic and electrical appliance industries.
The BOI secretary-general noted that inward foreign direct investments (FDI) were also growing. In the first five months of this year, applications for investment privileges filed by foreign investors totaled 431 projects, with a combined investment value of 141,196 million baht. Of this figure, applications for investment privileges from Japanese investors amounted to 221 projects or 51% of all projects from overseas investors, with a combine investment value of 57,483 billion baht or 41% of total investment value from overseas sources. The investment value increased by 77% from last’s year figure.
She added most projects from Japan were in automotive and electronic sectors, followed by projects from China worth over 20.5 billion baht, which accounted for 15% of investments from overseas sources. (TNA)
