Nuclear waiver would enable India produce clean energy: Nath
Berlin, Sep 9 (PTI) Commerce Minister Kamal Nath has said
that lifting of restrictions on selling nuclear technology to
India will open the doors for the country to develop clean and
reliable energy sources to meet global standards.
"This waiver by the nuclear suppliers group is crucial
for India to meet its energy requirements as well as to meet
global standards for clean energy," Nath said while delivering
the key-note address at the opening of the fourth annual India
Conference of the leading German economic daily Handelsblatt
in Berlin.
Hailing the decision, the commerce minister thanked
Germany for supporting India's position at the N.S.G. meeting
saying this backing had helped reaching an agreement in favour
of India.
The minister is attending a two day meeting on India
which has drawn over 90 Indian industrialists specially from
small and medium enterprises as well as top level managers and
senior executives from all over Germany.
Nath said the agreement was not merely about getting
access to nuclear technology and material for the development
of India's nuclear power industry, but it is also a
recognition of India's responsible behaviour as a nation
possessing nuclear technology.
India has surprised many nations sceptical about its
nuclear intentions by sticking firmly to a peaceful programme
and during the last 35 years it has shown to the world that it
is not only a responsible nation, but has also gone beyond any
non-proliferation effort.
"The agreement by the Nuclear Suppliers' Group
vindicated India's position on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation
Treaty (N.P.T.) and recognises that India strictly adheres to
non-proliferation even without signing the N.P.T.," the
minister said.
India has shown to the world the best way towards nuclear
N.P.T. are not implementing," he said.
