Noppadon: Abhisit will be sued on libel charges

BANGKOK, June 6 (TNA) - Exiled ex-Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra is considering to file a libel suit against Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva with a Thai court for the latter's allegation that he has been behind the Pheu Thai Party's four-step tactics toward a political pardon for himself.

Noppadon Pattama, Thaksin's legal advisor, acknowledged on Monday that a team of lawyers has been assigned to look into whether the libel case could be filed against Abhisit and whether Abhisit's recent remarks constitutionally violated Thai electoral laws.

Noppadon said if Thaksin, who is now in the Middle East, decided to sue Abhisit on the libel charges, he would be the plaintiff of the case himself, noting, however, that Thaksin has no plan to stay in Cambodia during the electoral period in Thailand currently. According to the legal advisor, Thaksin has called on Abhisit to be more mature and accountable when giving any comment against rival parties during the ongoing political contest in the run-up to Thailand's new general election on July 3.

Regarding to a coordinated move announced recently by Kaewsan Atipothi, former chief of the military-sponsored asset examination committee in the wake of Thailand's 2006 coup, and Dr. Tul Sithisomwon, leader of the multi-colours civic group, to file a case with the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) seeking the latter's probe on Pheu Thai Party top-list candidate Yingluck Shinawatra's alleged involvement in Thaksin's concealment of his Shinawatra family's business stakes, Noppadon said that it was an attempt to discredit Yingluck, who is Thaksin's youngest sister, and that he believed Yingluck would eventually clear herself from the political attack, foreseen beforehand.
