Salvage of sunken sugar barge continues in Thailand

AYUTTHAYA, June 6 (TNA) - The salvage of a sunken sugar barge off Chao Phraya River in Ayutthaya, Thailand continued on Monday after nearly a week since the accident on May 31.

The vessel crashed into a pillar of a bridge when it dipped half way by the river bank, dissolving some 2,400 tons of sugar with the water.

A leader of a salvage team admitted strong currents have so far delayed an operation to remove the vessel, in which steel plates will be fixed to the sunken bow before crane lifting it out of water.

He noted the process should take at least six hours, with 12 water pumps expected to help remove water inside the vessel during the operation.

In the meantime, a house owner by the waterfront, Ratchanee Paleekham, said a part of her home has been dismantled due to fears of strong currents generated from the incident.
Ratchanee said she doubted that anyone will own up to the damage caused. (TNA)
