Abhisit ready to hold talks with Hun Sen on some conditions
BANGKOK, June 5 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is ready to hold talks with Cambodian Prime Minster Hun Sen on the condition that the negotiations are subject to the Thai-Cambodian memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in 2000.
Mr Abhisit said Thailand would like the conflicts to be solved through negotiations under the existing framework of the bilateral Joint Boundary Commission (JBC). He said If Cambodian agreed to use the mechanism, it would then have to respect the 2000 MoU and withdraw its people from the disputed areas.
In respond to the remark of Gen Wichit Yathip, a close aide to former prime minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, that he had talked with Hun Sen and proposed Thailand and Cambodia to withdraw their soldiers from the disputed areas, jointly develop the 4.6-square-kilometer vicinity of the Preah Vihear temple, and let the JBC take charge of the demarcation, the Thai Premier said if Cambodia agreed with joint development, it should prove its sincerity by withdrawing its complaint from the International Court of Justice and its plan to unilaterally register the Preah Vihear temple as a world heritage site.
Mr Abhisit said if the Cambodian Premier agreed with the conditions, he would be willing to talk to solve problems between the two countries.
Asked if improved Thai-Cambodian relations would lead to the rescue of Thai citizens Mr Veera Somkwamkid and Ms Ratree Pipatanapaibul who were detained in Cambodia, he said attempts to help them were continuing. (TNA)
