Thailand celebrates the World Environment Day
BANGKOK, June 5 (TNA) – The Thai Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment organises an exhibition to raise public awareness of forest conservation on the occasion of the World Environment Day today.
Caretaker Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suwit Khunkitti said the United Nations chose the theme of “Forest: Nature at Your Service” for this year’s World Environment Day and his Ministry’s Department of Environmental Quality Promotion today organised the exhibition to promote the values and conservation of forests at the Impact exhibition complex in Muang Thong Thanim, Nonthaburi Province.
Suwit said the goal of his Ministry was to protect existing forests that accounted for 33 percent of national territory and to rehabilitate forest reserves and national parks to increase the proportion to 40 percent.
The Natural Resources and Environment Minister also said despite increased efforts by concerned authorities to reduce deforestation, illegal logging had remained a difficult problem. He noted that his ministry had allocated budgets for forest rehabilitation and reforestation but the rate of deforestation caused by illegal logging still exceeded that of new planting. He, therefore, called for comprehensive efforts of local villagers and authorities concerned to protect and increase the forest areas. (TNA)
