Thai authorities step up efforts to remove the sunken sugar barge out of the Chao Phraya River

BANGKOK, June 5 (TNA) - Water discharges from the Chao Phraya Dam have been reduced to facilitate workers’ attempts to remove the sunken sugar barge in the Chao Phraya River.

The leader of the salvage team said strong currents were a major obstacle that prevented the team from starting its operation to remove the sunken sugar barge. He said although over 20 workers had been mobilized for the task, they could not seal the cracks of the barge in the river.

The team leader also said that once the cracks were sealed, water could then be pumped out of the barge to make it afloat and the barge could be pulled out of the bank. He noted that the salvage operation would start as soon as the currents became weaker and it was expected to take about four days.

Meanwhile, Mr Jaran Disapirom, water management chief of the 12th Irrigation Office in Chai Nat province, said the Chao Phraya Dam has reduced its discharge rate from 1,050 cubic meters per second to 976 cubic meters per second. He noted that the discharges cannot be decreased any further due to excessive water from the North and that the dam could limit its discharges for a few days before it had to restore its normal discharge level. He, therefore, urged workers to salvage the barge quickly. (TNA)
