Thailand to recycle 84,000kg-waste to cut global warming

BANGKOK, June 4 (TNA) - Thailand will mark the World Environment Day on Sunday with an activity organised as part of its grand one-year project on recycling a total of 84,000 kilograms of waste, from November 2010 to December 2011, involving all sectors in the society.

Dr. Somyot Deerasami, Director General of the Thai Ministry of Public Health's Department of Health, said that his department has worked with the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) and other parties forming a "recycle network" to encourage people in the Thai society to take up greater involvement in and responsibility for easing the global warming problem or climate change, focusing on the “Green & Clean” Initiative.

Dr. Somyot acknowledged that the “Green & Clean” concept covers the promotion of efficient use of energy and other resources, efficient waste management and reutilization, environmental health and hygienic standards, as well as green farming activities; while raising public understanding on causes and impacts from the global warming and implementing related activities and assessments on the collaborative "green" action.

The senior Thai health official insisted that the global warming problem remains a major factor leading to unpredictable weather, disease outbreaks, as well as food and water shortages, saying that some 26,000 kilograms of waste materials have so far been collected from all parties involved in his department-initiated "green network".
