World Court's verdict hoped to be in favour of Thailand

BANGKOK, June 4 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its confidence that the Hague-based International Court of Justice (ICJ) will finally rule in favour of Thailand over Cambodia’s request for a reinterpretation of its 1962 verdict on the Preah Vihear Temple case.

Thai Foreign Ministry Spokesman Thani Thongpakdi insisted that Thailand has complied with the World Court's 1962 ruling; therefore, the Kingdom has hoped that the ICJ will then make its judgment based on the 1962 ruling.

Thai and Cambodian delegations testified before the World Court in the Netherlands on the Preah Vihear Temple case earlier this week, presenting their respective evidence and arguments over the renewed legal battle filed by Phnom Penh. The World Court ruled in 1962 that the main structure of the 11th century Hindu Temple was situated in the Cambodian territory.

The ICJ opened its hearings on May 30-31 for the Cambodian request on its injunction on having Thai troops withdrawn from a contentious area surrounding the Preah Vihear Temple. The World Court then demanded that both sides submit more evidence of damage to the temple during a new spate of border clashes between Thai and Cambodian troops earlier this year by June 14, before it rules on the Cambodian petition a few weeks thereafter.

Meanwhile, Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has reaffirmed Thailand's compliance with the historic ruling of the World Court in 1962, which applies to only the main structure of the ancient temple, not on the boundary issue, but he has declined to comment on the Cambodian petition.
