Farmers urged to maintain high quality and reputation of Thai rice

BANGKOK, June 4 (TNA) - As every June 5 has been designated Thailand's National Rice and Farmers' Day, Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Saturday called on local farmers to help maintain high quality and long-time reputation of Thai rice in the world community.

Abhisit made the call when he met representatives of Thai farmers from across the country at Government House in Bangkok on the occasion of this year's National Rice and Farmers' Day, during which he also briefed them on the national rice policy.

Abhisit acknowledged that Thailand has remained the world's top rice exporter due to the high quality of Thai rice; so, Thai farmers should concretely join hands in upholding the global image on the Thai rice by producing only high-graded grains.

The Democrat caretaker premier noted that rice is not only the main staple of Thai people, but those in several other countries across the world; therefore, the Thai government has continued implementing measures to ensure vocational security and income for Thai farmers, recognised as the backbone of the country, to raise their living standards.
