Thailand's SEC chair steps down amid scandal

BANGKOK, June 3 (TNA) - The Chairman of Thailand's Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Vijit Supinit, has resigned after he was accused of being involved in a takeover attempt of a listed company.
Vijit submitted his resignation on Thursday without giving any reason and it takes effect on Friday. His term as the Thai SEC chief was due to end next month.
Earlier, more than 100 SEC employees wore black to protest Vijit's alleged involvement in the hostile takeover attempt of Thoresen Thai Agencies Public Company Limited, one of Thailand's biggest bulk shipping agencies.
A Thoresen chief executive was quoted as saying that Vijit had met with the company's executives and investors who wanted to take over the firm and Vijit had been proposed as the company's new chairman.
The Thai SEC issued a statement, saying that it has assigned a committee to look into whether it is necessary to revise its governance and ethical rules for SEC board members. (TNA)
