Another munitions storage explodes in Russia

IZHEVSK, June 3 (Itar-Tass) -- Yet another munitions storage depot
caught fire and began to explode in Russia late on Thursday in the
Republic of Udmurtia.
Spokeswoman of the local emergency center Natalia Kudryashova told
Tass "the fire erupted in a military unit deployed in the settlement of
Pugachevo and triggered explosions of artillery shells."
So far there were no casualty reports.
The personnel of the military unit have been evacuated to a safe
distance and the evacuation of residents of the settlement is underway.
A week ago a munitions storage depot caught fire and exploded in the
Republic of Bashkiria. Twelve people were injured, 115 remained homeless
in the nearby settlement of Urman where dozens of buildings were destroyed
and damaged.
Over two thousand people were evacuated from Pugachevo because of
artillery shells explosions.
Spokeswoman of Udmurtia emergency center Natalia Kudryashova told Tass
evacuation of residents is underway in the radius of four kilometers from
the settlement of Pugachevo where the military unit is deployed.
The Volga regional emergency center said 18 storages with shells are
on fire as well as some 150 buildings. The territory of the unit is eight
kilometers in perimeter.
Exploding artillery shells hit an area at a distance of up to two
kilometers around the facility and railway traffic had to be suspended as
a result.
"Railway traffic had to be stopped because of the fire and explosions.
Three passenger trains have been delayed," the Udmurtia emergency service
said early on Friday.
"Storages with artillery shells are on fire and explosions can be seen
on the whole territory of the military unit," it added.
The exploding munitions at a military unit in Udmurtia are estimated
to equal the load of 10 thousand railway cars, according to the Volga
emergency center.
"According to preliminary information the munitions storages may have
10 thousand railway cars of cartridges and shells," it said.
The Russian emergencies ministry will dispatch two IL-76 fire aircraft
to help fight the blaze early on Friday.
