POLITICAL ANALYST: GUS DUR SHOULD BE A LAW-ABIDING FIGURE
Semarang, Sept 8 (ANTARA) - Former President Abdurahman Wahid popularly called as Gus Dur should be a law-abiding figure and avoid involvement in an anarchy by ordering supporters loyal to him to siege the office of the General Election Commission (KPU).
"Gus Dur should obey the law in this country. Ordering his supporters to siege the KPU office is an act of anarchy," said Susilo Utomo, a political analyst of the Diponegoro state university said here on Monday.
It is an unfortunate condition, that after the reforma era, such an anarchic act was still committed by certain masses or influential figures.
"The KPU either in the capital of Indonesia or the regions is actually an executioner of the law. Those in the KPU office could not be blamed," he said.
In democratic life, he added, those in the political parties should not only elect their leader but they also should abide by the law prevailing the country and avoid from being involved in commiting such a violence.
"The leader should be well-prepared to face such loss or victory," he said.
In Central Java, KPU office on Jalan Veteran No 1A in Semarang since Monday was tightly guarded by hundres of the police personnel.
There was an information that the National Awakening Youth Movement of Gus Dur's camp would come to KPU office in Semarang. But the news about their comming was still wishy washy, because some said they would come at 13:00 while the other said at 15:00.
Gus Dur was reported to be annoyed with KPU which was seen as having played tricks against his side by belittling their rights after receiving an information of his lawyer Ibrani, thus causing him to instruct his supporter to picket and occupy KPU offices across the country.
Earlier Ibrani said that KPU should obey the decision of the state administrative court which had instructed KPU to postpone the implementation of a decision on the handing over of a list of addresses and names of participating political parties in the 2009 general election especially in the context of PKB.
In the decision, KPU said the executives of PKB was Muhaimin Iskandar as the general chairman and Lukman Edy as secretary general with the address in Jalan Sukabumi 23 Menteng (previous office of Muhaimin), but not Jalan Kalibata Timur I No 12.
"What was registered in the Justice and Human Rights Ministry was that the PKB Executive Board office was located at Jalan Kalibata Timur I No 12," Ibrani said.
Because of this trick, Agus Wiyarto in his capacity of the chairman of the Yogyakarta regional branch of PKB, said that KPU had made such a serious blunder by passing on a request from PKB signed by Muhaimin regarding the movement of the party's headquaters from Kalibata to Jalan Sukabumi in Menteng.
"The issuance of the KPU letter has been capitalized on by Muhaimin and Lukman Edy to issue various decisions on the change of the executives of the party's regional and district branches," he said.
A move to besiege KPU office was only aimed at detering KPU from recognizing only a rival faction (PKB of Muhaimin version) as the official representatives of PKB, Agus said.
