India not interested in attacking Pakistan, says Asghar Khan

Islamabad, June 02, 2011 (PPI): First Pakistani Air Chief and the President of Tehrik-i-Istaqlal, Air Marshall (Retd) Asghar Khan said that India is not interested in attacking Pakistan as a strong Pakistan is in its interest.

He stated this while addressing at a public talk on "Pakistan's Security" organized by Institute of Strategic Studies on "Pakistan's Security" here.

Asghar Khan further said that if Pakistan falls, India will be the next adding that New Delhi is not insane to seek our fall. He said that none of the four wars we fought with India were started by India. The first incursion after Independence in Kashmir till Kargil, the hostilities was started by us. He said that history of subcontinent betrays that no incursion started from southeast, it was always was from North West.

In the panel discussion Air Marshal Asghar khan addressed to the question posed by the participants, the Air Marshal said that many other politicians also disliked military action by Gen Yahya in 1971, but they did not speak out. He said that he openly opposed the operation against Mujaeeb-ur-Rahman and was blamed as traitor. He said that we started Operation in Kashmir before 1965 war and Kargil was also our misadventure. He said that Gen Zia-ul-Haq senselessly started participating in Afghanistan war despite our opposition.

He told that he did not want Pakistan to explode the nuclear device in May 1998 as we had the capability and India is being never interested in attacking Pakistan. He stressed that it is criminal to spend less budget on education, we are spending one per cent on education, the dire need is to gradually increase the allocation of budget and should spend at least 10% on education and less on defense.

Answering to a question on Baluchistan, he said that it is painful and there is state of chaos and confusion. Air Marshal Asghar Khan said that the service persons should not obey unlawful commands, but it is very difficult to decide which is an illegal command.

Earlier, the Director General of the Institute of Strategic Studies, Ambassador Ashraf Jahangir Qazi, introduced the speaker and said that he is an honest Politician and could not achieve his political objectives because of his principled and candid stands. He further said national security is not only important for the armed forces, but it is equally important for all of us.

In the end Chairman of the Institute, Ambassador Gul Haneef, thanked Air Marshal Asghar Khan on behalf of the Institute for his scintillating talk. He completed his remarks by saying that war is not in the country's interest and democracy should be supported despite corruption.
