Telecom sector total contribution to national exchequer in FY2010 was over Rs 109bln
Karachi, June 02, 2011 (PPI): The total contribution of the country’s telecom sector to national exchequer at end of FY2010 was Rs 109.05 billion as taxes of which about 50% was from General Sales Tax.
In first half of FY2011, its contribution was over Rs 56.3 billion as compared to nearly Rs 49 billion in same period of previous fiscal year, showing 15% growth.
Pakistan Telecommunication Authority PTA’s Quarterly Report 2011, contribution of telecom sector to national exchequer through taxes, duties and regulatory charges kept growing. It is expected that by end FY2011, total contribution to national exchequer will be higher than last year.
According to an estimate, telecom sector contributes over 90% share in total taxes by services sector of Pakistan which is now being diverted to provinces under the 18th Amendment. The share of GST in total contribution from telecom sector is very impressive where about 50% of total contribution comes from GST collection.
GST collection in telecom services mainly is from mobile sector and its share in total GST collection is 86% followed by basic services as 11%. Activation Tax contribution to national exchequer stands at Rs 3 billion at end of 1st half of FY2010-11 which was Rs. 4 billion in same period last year.
The growth of telecom sector is healthy and positive. Total teledensity in the country grew by over 2.67% during the last one year. Total teledensity including mobile, fixed and WLL services stood at 65.2%.
Telecom regulator continued to facilitate the sector in regulatory issues and maintaining competition. PTA launched National Rabta Information Portal, survey to check power level of mobile towers, billing verification of mobile operators, curbing menace of illegal traffic, introduced online complaint Management System.
