Thailand to present more paper to World Court

BANGKOK, June 2 (TNA) - Thailand will soon present more documents to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Hague to defend against a petition filed by Cambodia, seeking the Court’s order for the withdrawal of Thai troops from a contentious area surrounding the Preah Vihear Temple, and to re-interpret its 1962 verdict on the Preah Vihear Temple case.

Thai caretaker foreign minister Kasit Piromya told reporters of the plan upon his return here from the Netherlands on Thursday, acknowledging that the additional information his ministry will be forwarding to the ICJ will include factual reports on a spate of clashes between Thai and Cambodian border troops near the ancient Preah Vihear Temple recently.

Kasit said that both Thailand and Cambodia are allowed to then present their written defence statements on the case to the World Court again by June 14, and that the ICJ was expected to decide within three weeks thereafter whether the Cambodian injunction request on Thailand's withdrawal of troops should be approved.

Kasit assessed that the World Court should begin to consider another Cambodian request on a review or a re-interpretation of its 1962 verdict on the Preah Vihear Temple case in September, with a new ruling expected within 4-5 months thereafter.

The Thai caretaker foreign minister noted that the timeframe is flexible, as there will be a scheduled change of the World Court's all five members of its judge panel late this year, and that both Thailand and Cambodia, as members of the United Nations, are to heed the World Court's final verdict.

If either Bangkok or Phnom Penh failed to observe the World Court's verdict, the case would then be forwarded to the UN Security Council for further consideration and resolution, he added. (TNA)
