Medicare investigates suspected PBS rorts
Medicare is investigating around 3500 suspected cases of rorting the subsidised medicine scheme each year, mostly from public tip-offs.
But the vast majority of cases are incorrect claims on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme rather than criminal fraud, a Senate estimates hearing has been told.
Medicare successfully prosecuted 10 cases in 2010 and 2011, including nine members of the public and one medical professional, official Colin Bridge told the hearing in Canberra.
The agency identified $10 million worth of incorrectly claimed PBS claims in 2009-10, the hearing was also told.
