"Abhisit" campaigns for votes in Thai North

LAMPHUN, June 2 (TNA) - Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is visiting the country's northern region on Thursday to campaign for votes for his Democrat Party.

Abhisit told reporters here after meeting with the local people that he would unveil his party's economic policies on Friday--which would be implemented if the Democrat Party was re-elected in the July 3 general election.

The Democrat Party leader dismissed an astrological statement published recently that he would be defeated by a female politician, saying that only the Thai electorate could decide on his future. In the meantime, he said would present optional policies and practical information to Thai voters in the run-up to the national poll.

In response to a plan announced by his political arch rival from the Pheu Thai Party, Yingluck Shinawatra, to launch electoral campaigns in the Democrat Party's stronghold in the southern region, Abhisit insisted people there were open to all political parties to campaign for votes, in line with his personal stance on promoting national reconciliation.

Abhisit, however, urged the Election Commission of Thailand (EC) to look into the recent comments of former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra that he would like to return to Thailand later this year, in time for paying his loyal tribute to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej's 84 birthday on December 5, to see whether the remarks breach electoral rules, as all Thai political parties have agreed on not mentioning the Thai monarchy in their vote campaigning. Abhisit maintained that Thaksin could return home at any time, but he must be obliged by the same laws as other Thai citizens.

The Thai caretaker premier then traveled to nearby Chiang Mai Province to continue campaigning for votes, after worshipping the Buddha relics at Lamphun's Hariphunchai Temple and the statue of the province's first and female ruler in the ancient time, named Jamathevi, psychologically-apparent for his party's good luck.
