Thai Feminists moan discrimination in MP selection process

BANGKOK, June 2 (TNA) - Feminist groups in Thailand complained that the proportion of male to female candidates in Thai political parties were not in line with a ratio of 60:40, as prescribed by the election law.

Women's Network Reshaping Thailand Coordinator, Suthada Mekrungruangkul, said during a discussion on women’s roles for the upcoming national poll on July 3 that by law, political parties were required to select a fair ratio of male to female MP candidates, but in which full compliance had not been achieved.

Chart Pattana Puea Pandin Party’s candidate selection for the July 3 election came closest to the ideal ratio, fielding 76 men and 49 women, giving a ratio of 61:39.

In this regard, large political parties namely the Democrat Party and its archrival Pheu Thai Party, were ranked in the 5th and 4th positions, respectively.

Meanwhile, Associate Professor Malee Phruekpongsawalee at Thammasat University’s Faculty of Law said the amount of eligible female voters outnumbered male voters by 1.2 million. In general, eligible female voters were also older than their male counterparts, Malee added. (TNA)
