Flash floods hit northern, southern Thai provinces

PETCHABUN, June 2 (TNA) - People in two Thai provinces far apart, the northern Petchabun and the southern Phang-nga, have now suffered from a natural disaster similarly, flash floods caused by heavy downpours, killing a villager so far.

In Petchabun, heavy downpours overnight caused a run-off of flash floods from the Pang Huey Mountain to hit Wichianburi and Nong Phai Districts on Thursday, damaging local infrastructure.

In Baan Wang Tian of Kok Prong Sub-district of Wichianburi, the heavy floods overturned a two-storey coach bus packed with students and other people travelling for a religious practice at a temple in Nakhon Sawan on a main highway, while sweeping another pick-up truck with eight passengers off a main road into a rice field, some 600 metres far away.

There were, however, no reports of casualties from the two incidents.

In Nong Phai's Moo 3 locality, the flash floods from the Puang-Sabsai Mountain, damaged and swept away a villager's house, killing the owner of the house whose body was found some one kilometre away.

In Phang-nga, torrential downpours over the past two days due to the influence of a southwest monsoon have also caused a run-off from local highlands to hit several low-lying areas; while water levels in major rivers have been rising, prompting the provincial disaster prevention and mitigation office to issue a warning for people living in the affected areas to beware of, probably, landslides and continuing heavy rainfalls over the next couple of days. Local trawlers have also been advised to remain onshore in the coming days due to high waves of 2-3 metres. (TNA)
