Vote campaigns continue in Thailand

BANGKOK, June 2 (TNA) - Vigorous vote campaigns have continued in Thailand, while many candidates expected fierce competition ahead of the national poll on July 3.

On Thursday, Caretaker prime minister and Democrat party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva toured Lamphun province to draw support for Democrat candidates in the northern city. Mr Abhisit then led his team further up north to San Kamphaeng district in Chiang Mai, under heavy security protection.

But with fierce competition dominating much of the city, a Democrat candidate there had sought police protection, as he campaigned against the rivaling Pheu Thai Party. The candidate also complained of vandalized campaign placards.

The Pheu Thai Party meanwhile, convened about 700 former MPs, campaign directors, and legal and accounting teams to discuss on the party’s campaign process, including rules and regulations set out by the Election Commission of Thailand (EC).

Vote campaigns apparently stretched far into Thailand’s southern border province of Pattani, where the Bhumjaithai Party promoted its candidate and distributed leaflets to the people.

In a related development, candidates from the Democrat, Pheu Thai, Bhumjaithai and Rak Santi parties renewed pledges in Bangkok city to honestly stage vote campaigns, refrain from violence and support political reforms, amid an air of reconciliation.

Deputy Bangkok Police Chief Pol Maj Gen Kreerin Inkaeo said Bangkok had so far been peaceful, though with much felt political rivalry throughout the capital, including widespread vandalism of campaign placards. He insisted however, police were ready to afford protection for every candidate seeking safety. (TNA)
