5,000 Thai exporters to conduct online businesses in 2011

BANGKOK, June 1 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Commerce said on Wednesday it expected at least 5,000 Thai exporters to conduct online business transactions this year.

Wutthichai Duangrat, Deputy Director-General of the Ministry’s Export Promotion Department, said Thai exporters had been encouraged to do online businesses by accessing http://www.thaitrade.com.

Wuttichai said he hoped that the number of online business-to-business (B-to-B) transactions would increase to 3,000-5,000 within a year, and that their export value should account for half the total value of Thai exports in five years.

The department planned to launch a pilot project to promote the online transactions actively from July 5, starting with 1,000 operators and over 10,000 product items.

Wutthichai noted online trade was not subject to time restrictions. In this regard, products would be available for online purchase around the clock. Furthermore, the alternative channel would give about 1 billion people worldwide access to Thai products.

The Export Promotion Department had planned to replace most offline trade with online ones in the next 3-5 years, he added. (TNA)
