Thailand's preparations for AEC progress well
BANGKOK, June 1 (TNA) - Thai caretaker deputy commerce minister Alongkorn Ponlaboot acknowledged on Wednesday that Thailand's preparations for the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by 2015 has progressed well, leaving now only a smaller proportion of the Kingdom's 100-per cent-preparations for the regional economic integration.
Alongkorn said, according to Thailand's 2nd-round assessment from 2010-April 2011, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has made about 52.78 per cent progress on average in the 10-member bloc's overall preparations for the establishment of the AEC; while Thailand alone has made some 63.64 per cent progress so far.
Alongkorn noted that Bangkok is speeding up on the remaining preparations needed for the AEC formation, mainly those in the country's customs and transport sectors, as well as arrangements to ensure quality of Thai products based on international standards and protections of consumers and intellectual property.
Alongkorn said that his ministry will be reporting the latest assessment to an official committee in charge of Thailand's international economic policies and the Thai caretaker Cabinet, covering a report on relevant problems or obstacles, and that his ministry has set up a liaison office for international plans on economic integration, its mandate of which includes the following up of Thailand's progress on preparations toward the formational of the AEC, based on the AEC Blueprint and a national policy on maximizing the Kingdom's benefits.
The Thai caretaker deputy commerce minister revealed that his ministry will also be promoting more participations of the Thai private sector in ASEAN-related forums, namely a business summit between ASEAN and the 27-member European Union (EU). (TNA)
