ICJ ruling on Cambodia's request expected in three weeks

BANGKOK, June 1 (TNA) - Thai delegates have completed their verbal testimonies before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on a case recently filed by Cambodia, seeking the withdrawal of Thai troops from a disputed area surrounding Preah Vihear temple.

The Cambodian request was made to the Hague-based World Court, pending the Court’s ruling on Cambodia's earlier petition for a review on a verdict of the Preah Vihear temple case in 1962.

Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya, who heads the Thai delegation at the ICJ, said the Thai side completed the testimony before the World Court on Tuesday night (Thailand's time), during which it argued that the ICJ appeared to have no legal mandate to issue an injunction for the withdrawal of Thai troops.

Kasit said the Thai side also noted the Court appeared to have no mandate either to review any of its previous verdicts, including on the Preah Vihear case.

In 1962, the ICJ ruled Cambodia's ownership to only the main structure of the 11th century Hindu temple, but excluded the temple's surrounding area.

According to the Thai caretaker foreign minister, the World Court is anticipated to decide in the next three weeks if an injunction should be issued, as requested by Phnom Penh.

Meanwhile, Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva insisted that the ICJ has no legal mandate to review any previous verdict, and that he foresees "good news" for Thailand eventually on the awaited World Court decision. (TNA)
