Thailand to continue with action against Cambodian-proposed Preah Vihear plan

BANGKOK, June 1 (TNA) - Thai caretaker natural resources and environment minister Suwit Khunkitti has vowed to accelerate convincing the 20-member World Heritage Committee, under the supervision of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), for a proper understanding on problems emerging from a management plan of the ancient Preah Vihear Temple proposed by Cambodia.
Suwit, who heads a Thai delegation negotiating with the World Heritage Committee on the issue, said he would also hold talks with the Cambodian side before the forthcoming meeting of the World Heritage Committee, set to be held in Paris from June 19-29.
Suwit acknowledged that many World Heritage Committee member countries had previously supported Cambodia, saying that he, however, believed the countries should eventually understand the problems raised by Thailand.
In response to a media enquiry into whether a forthcoming verdict of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the case filed by Phnom Penh would affect the upcoming meeting of the World Heritage Committee, the Thai minister noted that all parties concerned were awaiting the ICJ's ruling but he believes that the ICJ should not issue any new order.
Meanwhile, Thai caretaker prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva confirmed before his caretaker Cabinet that UNESCO's World Heritage Committee agreed, for the first time in two years, on a Thai proposal on postponing its consideration of the Cambodia-raised Preah Vihear management plan, pending border demarcation between Thailand and Cambodia.
Mr Abhisit said therefore, the caretaker natural resources and environment minister would be assigned to prepare a strong Thai team and an appropriate statement, backed by reliable written support to defend and uphold Thailand's position and to lobby for proper understanding on Preah Vihear-related issues in the international community.
