Natural gas consumption in Thailand reaches 30-year peak in May

BANGKOK, June 1 (TNA) - The consumption of natural gas in Thailand has reached its highest level in 30 years this month, partly due to rising oil prices.

Kurujit Nakornthap, deputy permanent secretary of the Energy Ministry, said the consumption stood between 4.5-4.6 billion cubic feet per day, up from about 4.1 billion cubic feet per day in 2010.

Mr Kurujit revealed the consumption among automobiles soared to 6,000 tons per day, although more drivers were turning to natural gas due to the rising oil prices.

On a note, he said his Ministry was sourcing more natural gas to meet increasing demands from the economic growth.

Until now, natural gas deposits in the Gulf of Thailand, including areas adjacent to Malaysia, amounted to 23 trillion cubic feet. The reserves were expected to be sufficient for about 18 years of consumption based on present demands of 4.5 billion cubic feet per day. However, should demands reach 5 billion cubic feet per day, the reserves would be depleted in 15 years.

Meanwhile, the Thai energy official acknowledged Germany’s plan to stop using nuclear power plants by 2022, but insisted each country had its own policy.

He noted for instance, China confirmed it would build 20 extra nuclear plants, while Thailand was studying on the possibility of nuclear power development. (TNA)
