Thailand tightens security measures at hospitals

BANGKOK, June 1 (TNA) - Thai caretaker public health minister Jurin Laksanawisit has ordered tougher security measures at all hospitals nationwide, following a theft of a newborn at a hospital in Bangkok.

Jurin said that he had assigned Permanent Secretary for Public Health Paijit Warachit to instruct all hospitals under state supervision, to impose stricter security measures, involving more patrols and surveillance at secured areas.

The Thai health minister acknowledged that hospitals had also been urged to inform out-patients or visitors not to leave their children unattended or with strangers, and to report any suspicious activity to hospital staff.

The move followed a case in which a three-month newborn was stolen from a mother who was treated at Rajavithi Hospital on Monday. The culprit later returned the baby girl, admitting she was married and only wanted a child of her own. (TNA)
