7 Districts of Sindh show poor performance in anti-polio drives, Prime Minister seeks report

Ratodero, May 31, 2011 (PPI): Following the instructions of Prime Minister’s Secretariat, Sindh Health Department has sought performance report on urgent basis from Executive District Officers (Health) of seven districts of province, where the independent monitors had declared the quality of national anti-polio campaigns conducted in January, March and April 2011 as sub-optimal.

The districts where the quality of anti-polio drive was observed as sub-optimal include Hyderabad, Jacobabad, Kashmore, Larkana, Sanghar, Tando Allahyar and seven towns of Karachi namely Baldia, Bin Qasim, Gadap, Meamari, North Nazimabad, Saddar and SITE tow.

The Prime Minister’s Secretariat through a letter dated May 12 had asked the Chief Secretary of Sindh to advise district administration of all the seven districts to submit detailed report addressing weaknesses identified during the anti-polio drives. Sindh Health authorities however drafted a letter for EDOs (Health) on May 25 directing them to submit the reports on respective districts in the light of targets set in National Emergency Action Plan for Polio, so as to give presentation to the Prime Minister on consistently poorly performing districts in a meeting at the end of May.

However, surprisingly, the letter dated May 25 was faxed to the concerned EDOs by Sindh Health Department on May 31, six days after the same was drafted and signed by the concerned health authorities.
