Panthers lead Rabbitohs 16-4 at halftime
(AAP) - Penrith forward Luke Lewis sent NSW State of Origin selectors a strong message in setting up the Panthers' 16-4 halftime lead over South Sydney at Centrebet Stadium on Monday night.
Lewis was only one NRL match back from injury when the Blues side was picked for game one, and he was subsequently left out.
However, the experienced representative player who is one of the best all-round talents in the game, is a front-runner to come into Ricky Stuart's team on the bench for the second tie in Sydney, should the NSW coach wish to make changes.
Lewis was a constant threat for the Panthers on the left-hand side of the field, making several half-breaks and also combining well with incumbent Blues centre Michael Jennings.
Lock forward Lewis scored the opening try of the match after just four minutes, when he ran around centre Dylan Farrell and targeted a back-pedalling Chris Sandow.
Souths hit back with a try against the run of play, when another backrower hopeful of an Origin recall showed some silky skills in the wet conditions.
Maroons candidate Dave Taylor managed to juggle and hold onto a rebound off a John Sutton kick, before throwing a no-look overhead pass which saw James Roberts cross in the corner to cut the margin to 6-4.
However Penrith re-asserted their dominance to close out the half, thanks mainly to smart work from halfback Luke Walsh.
The No.7 set up Trent Waterhouse with a sharp left-foot step and flick out the back in the 20th minute, before Walsh then threw a precise pass to right-centre Brad Tighe, which saw winger Adrian Purtell over in the corner.
