Advancement needed for Thailand’s creative R&D sector

BANGKOK, May 30 (TNA) - The advancement of Thailand's research and development (R&D) sector is critical to the country’s increased productivity of creative industrial values within ASEAN, said a government agency.

The Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) issued the statement here this week, insisting Thailand had the potential to become a creative economy and an industrial leader within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Statistics in 2010 from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) showed Thailand had the highest amount of creative exports in ASEAN, with an export value of over five billion US dollars, while Singapore ranked second followed by Malaysia.

Thailand was expected to struggle in R&D competitiveness however, as Thailand ranked third in ASEAN, coming after Singapore and Malaysia, due to lack of support and funding.

To improve R&D efficiency, the Thai government had been encouraged to allocate more funds to R&D, to achieve its target export value of the creative industries, which should be 20% of the country’s GDP by 2012.

The DIP also suggested the country move on from heavy reliance on manufacturing and natural resource sectors to those on knowledge and creativity instead.

In summary, innovative and value added products as well as services should be promoted further in order to achieve more substantial income, it said. (TNA)
