Police nab nearly 100 Sydney shoplifters
Almost 100 people are facing charges after a crackdown on shoplifting in Sydney's CBD and the southern suburb of Miranda.
Seventy-one people were charged with a total of 91 offences over the eight days of operation Lightfingers this month.
Fifteen youths and six adults were arrested and received cautions for 26 offences relating to retail theft while $26,000 in stolen goods was recovered.
Redfern Region Enforcement Squad Commander, Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Bell, praised the major retail outlets for their help.
"It's always pleasing to see police and the retail sector working hand-in-hand to stop shoplifters in their tracks," he said in a statement on Monday.
"Thieves seeking to capitalise on opportunistic crime are under more scrutiny than ever, with both uniformed and undercover police patrolling stores across the state."
The operation was run in two phases - in Miranda from May 5 to 7 and in the CBD from May 24 to 28.
